Which Currency Do You Use?

I have noticed something that is often overlooked when doing a presentation to a foreign audience that involves currencies.

Usually what happens is that the presenter translates a presentation originally written in their native language and leaves all the monetary values in the native currency. Herein lies the problem. Most foreigners visiting your country do not know the value of your currency and therefore when you talk about thirty million Won (in Korea) they have absolutely no idea what that value is.

It is far better to convert your local currency into US Dollars. All you need to do is do a quick conversion when you are preparing your presentation. The figure does not have to be exactly right when you do your presentation (currency values change daily) but it does need to be an approximation.

Alternatively, you could leave your local currency in the slide and give the figure verbally as you are talking.

Either way, you do need to make sure that your audience fully understands the figures you are talking about.
